1. THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME.
Based on the much-adapted young-adult novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, Hosoda Mamoru's animated fantasy tell the story of a high school senior who finds she can travel backwards through time.
Tomboyish, 17-year-old Makoto Konno is in her senior year of high school and has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She's an average student, something of a klutz and endless exasperated with her bratty younger sister, but she's got great friends in brainy Kousuke Tsuda and cutie Chiaki Mamiya , who transferred in a the beginning of the semester. The three are inseparable. The story begins on June 13th, a hot, lazy day right before the end of the school year. Makoto gets up late, as usual, and has to rush to school, where nothing goes right. She fails a pop quiz in math class, creates total chaos in home by setting fire to a pan of hot oil, drops a stack of books she's responsible for taking to the science lab and fumbles every play in the casual baseball game. And then it gets worse: As she's cycling home, her brakes fail while she's zooming down a steep hill that ends on the train tracks. Unable to stop, Makoto is thrown in front of a moving train and killed… except that she isn't. She wakes up on the ground, a few feet from the tracks and a few minutes before the train comes through. It turns out that Makota has mysteriously developed the ability to travel back in time, and once she gets a handle on her power, she uses to undo all the embarrassments of that June day, and then to meddle in her classmates lives. Her intentions are benevolent, but gradually realizes that every change she makes affects others, and not necessarily for the better.
2. HELLO WORLD.
The story follows most of your typical anime romance plot beats
at first, as our male high school boy protagonist struggles to overcome his
shyness until one day when he encounters a man claiming to be himself from the
future. The future Naomi informs him that this world is a computer simulation
of the world from the past, and that he's trying to change what happens here
out of his own sense of guilt for failing to protect the girl who was briefly
his girlfriend back then. The most interesting part of this development is that
instead of being presented as an ingenious plot twist, it happens early, and
the meatier developments happen later. The film is more interested in its
romance, which is for the best because it's a cute one.
The
relationship between Naomi and Ruri is endearingly awkward. Naomi is
intimidated and taken aback by Ruri's gruff and no-nonsense attitude, but they
eventually bond over a shared love of books. A romance between two introverts
with a lot in common would probably have been boring in a TV series, but it
works well enough in a film, especially since there's a distinct lack of
frustrating misunderstandings to complicate the courtship.
3. FIREWORKS.
Schoolchildren
Norimichi, Yusuke and Junichi want to know if fireworks look round or flat from
the side. They make a plan to find the answer at a fireworks display, while
Nazuna schemes to run away with Norimichi or Yusuke, whoever wins at the pool.
This film tells the story of a schoolgirl who finds a pretty transparent ball by the sea, on the day of a fireworks display of a religious festival in a seaside town in Japan. She plans to run away from home to escape from her unhappy home, as her mother is about to remarry for the third time. However, her escape fails until her male classmate finds out the supernatural power that the transparent ball has.
4. PATEMA INVERTED.
Patema is a plucky young girl from an underground civilization boasting an incredible network of tunnels. Inspired by a friend that mysteriously went missing, she is often reprimanded due to her constant excursions of these tunnels due to her royal status. After she enters what is known as the "forbidden zone," she accidentally falls into a giant bottomless pit after being startled by a strange creature.
Finding herself on the surface, a world literally turned upside down, she begins falling towards the sky only to be saved by Age, a discontented student of the totalitarian nation known as Aiga. The people of Aiga are taught to believe that "Inverts," like Patema, are sinners that will be "swallowed by the sky," but Age has resisted this propaganda and decides to protect his new friend. A chance meeting between two curious teenagers leads to an exploration of two unique worlds as they begin working together to unveil the secrets of their origins in Sakasama no Patema, a heart-warming film about overcoming differences in order to coexist.
